Thassos

Introduction

The island of Thassos has been inhabited since neolithic times. It is a favorite destination for many Greeks during the summer who flock to the island to enjoy its dense forests, mountainous terrain, and beautiful beaches. Thassos is just 4 km away from the port of Kavala and frequent ferries make it an easy to reach destination.

What to Do and See

    Towns and Villages

    • Thassos or Limenas or Limin
      The capital is also the largest town, and the hub that connects it to the mainland via ferry, and to the rest of the island via bus service. It is a picturesque town with about 2600 inhabitants. The ruins of the ancient city are scattered around its streets. At the port the remains of the Hellenistic and Roman agora are visible, and a walking tour from the port reveals the Odeon to the north, as well as the Artemision, while the temple of Poseidon, and the ancient theater are located at the west end of the town.
    • Theologos
      An old picturesque village located 60 km from Limenas on the interior of the island.
    • Limenaria
      A small town on the south of the island that has seen much devolopment in the last years, it is adorned with the old Venetian castle.
    • Panagia
      This small town was the old capital of the island, and it tends to be overrun by tourists without losing much of its character. One of the island's best beaches, Chrysi Ammoudia (golden sand), is located a short drive from Panagia.

      Museums

    • The Archeological Museum of Thassos exhibits ancient artifacts found at the various excavations around the island. Most impressive exhibit is the collosal kouros holding a ram offering from the Archaic era. Many other Artifacts date from the Classical, Hellenistic, and Roman eras
