The island of Thassos has been inhabited since neolithic times.
It is a favorite destination for many Greeks during the summer
who flock to the island to enjoy its dense forests, mountainous
terrain, and beautiful beaches. Thassos is just 4 km away from
the port of Kavala and frequent ferries make it an easy to reach
destination.
What to Do and See
Towns and Villages
- Thassos or Limenas or Limin
The capital is also the largest town, and
the hub that connects it to the mainland via ferry, and
to the rest of the island via bus service. It is a picturesque
town with about 2600 inhabitants. The ruins of the ancient
city are scattered around its streets. At the port the
remains of the Hellenistic and Roman agora are visible,
and a walking tour from the port reveals the Odeon to
the north, as well as the Artemision, while the temple
of Poseidon, and the ancient theater are located at the
west end of the town.
- Theologos
An old picturesque village located 60 km from Limenas on
the interior of the island.
- Limenaria
A small town on the south of the island that has seen much
devolopment in the last years, it is adorned with the old
Venetian castle.
- Panagia
This small town was the old capital of the island, and it
tends to be overrun by tourists without losing much of its
character. One of the island's best beaches, Chrysi Ammoudia
(golden sand), is located a short drive from Panagia.
Museums
- The
Archeological Museum of Thassos exhibits
ancient artifacts found at the various excavations
around the island. Most impressive exhibit is
the collosal kouros holding a ram offering from
the Archaic era. Many other Artifacts date from
the Classical, Hellenistic, and Roman eras
