which means
"beautiful marble".
This is the ancient stadium which was built in 330 BCE by Lykourgos,
and it was
restored in its present form between 1896
and 1906 by Anastasios Metaxas.
It was ready for
the revival of the Olympic games in 1896, and also for the their
tenth aniversary in 1906. Its marble seats can host 60000 spectators,
and it was used in the Olympic games
in Athens
2004 when
it hosted the Archery comptetition, and the Marathon finish.
