devastating fires raged in Halkidiki in northern Greece, and
in Lakonia in southern Peloponnese.

The rugged terrain made the fire-fighting efforts extremely
difficult, and many residents and tourists evacuated the area
as the fire consumed homes and hotels in Halkidiki.
