The ancient marble quarry at Maranthi, Paros, was a subterranean tunnel still visible today. Parian marble was sought after by ancient artists who craved it's hardness, color, and consistency. Famous statues such as Venus de Milo, and Hermes of Praxitelis were carved in marble from Paros.
