Picture of an Evzon (palace ceremonial guard) standing still in front of the monument to the unknown soldier in front of the Greek parliament building in Athens.
The traditional outfit with the
wool tights and the short, richly
pleated skirt is a source
of amusement for tourists who flock
the site to snap photographs of
the changing of the guard ceremony.
For Greeks, the traditional outfit,
the foustanela, is a source of
pride as it symbolizes the idea
of the wild and uncompromising
ancestors who lived in the countryside
and fought to overthrow the Ottoman
rule, and who later, during WWII,
repelled an Italian invasion.
