The Archaeological site at the location Akrotiri encloses the excavations of a Bronze age town that was buried under volcanic material sometime between 1627 and 1600 BCE. It is similar to the better promoted Pompeii, but it's worth noting that Akrotiri predates the Italian town by about 1600 years! This is one of the frescoes that adorned one of the Bronze Age buildings, now on display at the National Museum of Athens.

Photo of Meteora. This is a panoramic
photo collaged from different images. The background has
been altered to best accommodate a digital screen, and
to enhance the spectacular rock formations. In the foreground
hovers the monastery of Roussanou, perched atop an upward-reaching rock. On the top right, the monastery of Grand
Meteoron is visible (only in the 1680x1050 version).

Visit Athens Agora Greece pictures
The Agora displays the tranquility that comes only from having stared at the height of absolute Greatness and into the depths of infinite Cruelty. Its presence transcends centuries and cultural influences from prehistoric times to the modern era, and has witnessed the spectacular transformation of prehistoric Mycenaean civilization to the Athenian Golden era, and the Roman culture. It has also suffered through invasions of every imaginable foe who took its vengeance out on the Agora grounds.

A stroll through the streets of Parga reveals an "island flavor" with the multitude of the tourist shops and tavernas lined up on both sides and the carefree tourists that constantly stroll up and down the narrow corridors.

It was designed as a monument to everything that the Athenian thought pattern represented and which placed man in its center of interest. In the monuments of the Acropolis the ideals which forged western thought and culture are embodied in artistic expression and formal stylization of the highest degree. The Parthenon itself managed to push the aesthetic conventions of its time to their logical conclusion: a building that touched the ideal in every formal detail.

Visit Sounio Greece pictures
What a sight it must have been when the ancient Greek seafarers laid their eyes on the majestic Temple of Poseidon at the very tip of cape Sounio. There must have been no better reward for sailors who braved the waves of the Aegean Archipelago than the view of the orderly marble columns atop the rugged rocks that form the cape of Sounio.

Visit Meteora Greece pictures
Meteora is a visual feast for the soul, connecting in such a majestic way the underground, the earth, and the sky. It is not by accident that it was chosen as a major place of worship for monks and nuns who found a place closer to the universe. These monks found atop the suspended rocks a place of meditation created seemingly by metaphysical forces; the kind of forces that earth forges over millions of years.

Even human civilization that reaches back 3500 years to prehistory is exposed as ephemeral in Thera. On Santorini one anticipates the tremendous forces of nature that tend to emphasize our mortal fragility a bit more than usual - a reminder that makes the present moment even more meaningful, its enjoyment even more imperative, and its existence a bit more exhilarating.

Photo of the Eastern Crete coast. This photo is taken from the Itanos archaeological site, looking southeast. Behind me is the nice beach of Erimoupolis. On the rocks in the foreground one can see the ruins of and ancient structure, and just behind this headland lies a nice sandy beach that is only accessible by boat. And just beyond it, one can find the beautiful Vai beach.

"...[beauty consists] in the proportions not of the elements, but of the
parts, that is to say, of finger to finger, and of all the fingers to the palm
and the wrist, and of these to the forearm to the upper arm, and of all the other
parts to each other, as they are set forth in the Canon of Polykleitos."

The seas have sculpted these rocks for eons into harshness itself ; a harshness that feels sweet as the spray of the ocean disperses into thin mist and fills the air.
