| Papa Nero Beach |
Location
Pelion, Greece
Beach Name
Papa Nero
Overall Rating
5=superb beach, best we have visited and worth going far
out of our way to swim there again. In other words, we would travel
around the world just to swim there.
Beach
SP=pebbles (small round rocks comprise the beach)
S=sand (sandy beach)
Sea Floor
S=sand (sandy beach)
R=rock (large rocks on the beach or the bottom of the
sea)
Water
4= Sea water was excellent and inviting for swimming.
We would go out of our way to swim there again
(These are my, and my family's own unscientific observations of
the water feel and appearance)
We enjoy the water when it is crystal clear, and cool instead of
warm. We don' like visible floating particles of any kind or algae
settled on the beach.
Clothing
Topless sunbathing is common
Access
Poor=accessible by car, poor road, long walk or climb
Amenities
R=restaurant (on the beach)
B=bar (on the beach)
CA=camping on the beach
H=hotel on the beach
RV / Camper Accessibility
N= Campers explicitly forbidden, or the site is unsuitable
for RV parking
Snorkeling
3=nice snorkeling site
The rocky headland and the shore at the southern end of the beach
provides a nice snorkeling experience when the sea is calm. The
sea gets very deep, very fast as you move south and you can find
a couple of small caverns to explore.

Notes
The best beach of Pelion offers soft white sand, and its is vast
enough to absorb large crowds. The road to the beach stops at a
(inadequate) parking spot and then one has to walk a bit to get
to the best part of the beach which starts at the middle.
Most bathers seem to just stay at the northern end (near the parking
spot) which is very mediocre and crowded, so if you drive the two
hours from Volos just to swim there, make the extra effort to walk
to the southern end of Papa Nero.
Several restaurants and bars line the beach. Restaurant "I
Oraia Paralia" was the best we tried.
Papa Nero is located within walking distance form Ag. Ioannis,
and even though few hotels are near it, most accommodations are
found in Ag. Ioannis itself. A large olive grove doubles as a very
crowded and rudimentary campground at the northern end of Papa Nero.
In essence, Ag. Ioannis with its two beaches, and Papa Nero comprise
one long beach separated by one long rocky part in front of the
campground and the parking lot.
