Kos City beaches

Beach, at the northern end of Kos city.

Beach Name

Kos

Location

Kos City

Overall Rating

The beach to the north of Kos city and to the extreme south: 3 / 5 = Good beach, would choose it for swimming among other beaches if we were in the area. If we were visiting the area we would consider this beach a good place to swim.

The beach alongside Vasileos Georgiou Street: 1 / 5 = The beach was fine for swimming and sunbathing one time. We visited the beach during our stay in the area and would not consider it a prime attraction.

Beach

S = sand (sandy beach)

Sea Floor

S = sand (sandy beach)

Water

3 / 5 = Very nice and clean sea. We would go swimming there again if we were in the area

(These are my, and my family's own unscientific observations of the water feel and appearance during our visit)
We enjoy the water when it is crystal clear, and cool instead of warm. We don' like visible floating particles of any kind or algae settled on the beach.

Access

Good = Paved road all the way to the beach, parking near the beach

Amenities

T = Town within walking distance

RV / Camper Accessibility

Campers explicitly forbidden, or the site is unsuitable for RV parking

Snorkeling

Does not look promising, I did not dive

Clothing

Topless sunbathing is common

Notes

The "beaches" along Vasileos Georgiou road (south of the port) are not very appealing. Maybe years ago they were adequate, but today all the sand has been eroded away. What you will find there are man-made, narrow patches of sand, too close to traffic, that are sustained with sandbags.

When we called to book a hotel room (with Hotel Afendoulis) we asked if the beach was withing walking distance. The owner's reply, that he beach was 100 meters away, was true, but he neglected to say that it is the "sandbagged" kind. If you are staying in one of the hotels along Vas. Georgiou street running across the street to take a dip in the water is probably not a bad idea, but if you want to enjoy your day at the beach head to the north of town, or furhter south. Better yet, head out of town.

A little further south along the same road, after the marina, there is another sandy spot that might not be a bad place to swim if you are stuck in Kos town without a vehicle.

The beach alongside the northern end of Kos town is very crowded and it is framed by the most touristy, and least appealing part of town. The sand is soft and the water is clean though, so if you are looking for a place to swim in the city and you can ignore the party crowd this might be a good beach to visit.

One of the "beaches" alongside Vasileos Georgiou Street in Kos town.
Note the sandbags on the right fighting a lost battle agaisnt the waves.
