GREECE BEACH

Chiona Beach

Location

Lasithi, Eastern Crete, Near Palaikastro

Beach Name

Chiona

Other spellings: Hiona, Chionas, Hionas

My Rating Overall

3=good beach, would choose it for swimming among other beaches if we were in the area

Beach

Sand and some small pebbles

Sea Floor

S=sand

Water

4=sea water was excellent and inviting for swimming. We would go out of our way to swim there again

(just my own unscientific observation of the water feel and appearance)
My family and I enjoy the water when it is crystal clear, and cool instead of warm. We don' like to see any visible floating particles of any kind or algae settled on the beach.

Clothing

Topless sunbathing is common

Access

Good=paved road all the way to the beach, parking near the beach

Amenities

Three restaurants on the beach

RV / Camper Accessibility

Site suitable for free camping. Ample space for parking on the beach vicinity.
Although Campers explicitly forbidden

Snorkeling

The rocks to the South look promising but I did not dive

Notes

A very nice beach with a very gentle sandy slope. It is located withing walking distance from the Palaikastro (Rousolakos) archaeological site. Admission to the site is free and the site can be easily navigated in about half hour. Most of the artifacts found at Rousolakos are exhibited at the Sitia Archaeological Museum.

Several low trees provide shade for bathers and parked cars.
